After our beautiful trip to Lipton’s Seat we took the train from Haputale to Kandy. We decided to splash out on 2nd class for this long journey, approximately 5 and a half hours. It cost 210 rupees per person (approx £1.05) and we had slightly wider seats and the carriages were very quiet the whole way.
The first section of the train journey was stunning through the hill country, lots of beautiful views from the windows and doorways.
We enjoyed some of the local snacks sold cheaply on the train in recycled lined paper!
When we arrived in Kandy we struggled to find decent accommodation for a good price, we found this the most overpriced place we visited! We eventually stayed at a place called Natashiya Holiday Inn, after lots of haggling and a complaint about our first room ended up with a nicer one, with amazing views, but still overpriced and a bit dirty!
By the time we arrived and had found our accommodation it was quite late and we had unfortunately missed the Kandyian dancing which is supposed to be very impressive. We went into town and went to Muslim Hotel for our food, we had some mixed samosas for starter which were delicious. We then had kottus for main which were cheap, but not the best we tasted on our trip.
After dinner we decided to retreat back to our hotel and enjoy the luxury of TV!
The next morning we had breakfast at the hotel, which was included and was a Western breakfast, but ok.
We then walked into town and walked around the lake which is pretty, but it is very busy on the East side.We strolled to the British Garrison Cemetery which was very interesting. The graveyard caretakers were able to tell us lots of history of the people and the graves. Lots of people who died in the 1800s died very young in their 20’s or 30’s and died of diseases such as cholera and dysentery. In the trees around the graveyard were lots of monkeys roaming free!
We then walked into the free area of the Temple of the Tooth which is quite impressive to see the outside of the buildings and look at the pretty grounds.
We visited a church next door which felt very English and was very pretty.
We walked around a few shopping streets, but we didn’t really like the business of Kandy and the hassle.
We were quite happy to take a bus out of Kandy at 11am!
